LEGO Building Tips

While you may see builds on the internet and say to yourself, “Wow, I could never do that,” You most likely wont realize that the process is quite simple. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Get Inspired!

It may seem difficult to come up with ideas for builds sometimes. When your imagination has seemingly run dry, take a dig through your bricks to try and find a piece that may spark something in your brain. Another alternative is to think of sets you want to exist, but don’t. This is sure to give you an idea or two.

2. Plan Things Out.

In order to have a good build, you have to envision the final product. With a goal in mind, it is easier to stay determined on the build. Draw out what you envision in your head, and figure out what parts you might need, and if you have them in your collection.

Here is a sketch I drew while planning this build.

3. Colored In

Once you have an idea for how you want your build to turn out, find some parts that will fit the correct color scheme. Try to limit your colors to different shades of three to four hues. For instance, if you are building a beach, shades of blue, yellow, grey, and beige would be very beneficial.

These parts make up the build’s color palette.

4. Break the Mold!

No, don’t literally snap your parts in half, but instead, use lesser known or unconventional methods where you need to. Don’t let a few pieces get in your way. Stick with traditional methods when you can, but feel free to think outside the brick.

(WARNING: Many of these unique methods are considered “illegal” by building tournaments, and can get you disqualified.)

5. Share to the World

Once you feel confident with your creation, take some photos and share it out! Show it to friends, family, or post it on social media (if allowed) and see what people think! be open to constructive criticism, because everything has room for improvement, and someone else might inspire you to make certain tweaks that make the build much better.

Here’s the final product!
